Big Issues London

"The Big Issue"

The Big Issue Foundation's core ethos is self help. We offer support to homeless and socially excluded people who seek to gain control of their lives and help them move off the streets and into a home and a job.We work with over 2000 vendors across the UK, supporting them with a diverse program of opportunities either delivered through our own services or in partnership with specialist agencies. Each new vendor has a Needs Assessment, and from this an individual action plan is set, which is monitored in supervision sessions with support staff.

Ghandi

There come to us moments in life when about some things we need no proof from without. A little voice within us tells us, 'You are on the right track, move neither to your left nor right, but keep to the straight and narrow way.

A person falsely claiming to act under divine inspiration or the promptings of the inner voice without having any such, will fare worse than the one falsely claiming to act under the authority of an earthly sovereign. Whereas the latter on being exposed will escape with injury to his body, the former may perish body and soul together.

You have to believe no one but yourselves. You must try to listen to the inner voice, but if you will not have the expression"inner voice", you may use the expression "dictates of reason", which you should obey, and if you will not parade God, I have no doubt you will parade something else which in the end will prove to be God, for, fortunately, there is no one and nothing else but God in this universe.

For me truth is the sovereign principle, which includes numerous other principles. This truth is not only truthfulness in word, but truthfulness in thought also, and not only the relative truth of our conception, but the Absolute Truth, the Eternal Principle, that is God. There are innumerable definitions of God, because His manifestations are innumerable. They overwhelm me with wonder and awe and for a moment stun me.

DonInLondon - ĎDay In The Lifeí Work It Because We Are Worth It

Work What? Steps Of Change

In my world I so work hard at the steps of change associated with recovery from addiction to alcohol. The AA fellowship has been around a decades and attracts many who have a desire to stop drinking.

Old Habits Die Hard

And for compulsive drinkers of alcohol, well we face a real struggle often maintaining sobriety for any length of time. So we live to a one day programme which keeps us firmly in the fellowship and firmly on a road f sobriety.

Habits

We all have them and its not just drink for me. I have old and painful habits in my thinking, which often lead me astray. Away from my nature and my preferences. My preferences are to be open honest and willing. To develop and retain integrity. And everyday I know there ways we move off this path so easily and always for good reason.

Men And Women

I hear much discussion about men and women in our fellowship, and even though we get to know that there is little difference for addiction for women or men, we come to fellowship with every experience which stereotypes us as male and female as well as our drinking problems too.

Men Are From Mars and Women are From Venus

An inconvenient convenience for making mischief I fear most often. When we apply ourselves to living in the cold light of day, with our wits back and our feelings ready for another sally at life, all the old teachings and attitudes and behaviours are ready to come to the fore. What we learn of life and relationships is from experience first and then for many who wish to move away from the stereotypical, we are hampered by our old ideas and understandings. We can fall into old traps, old notions and old fears. We can truthfully apply ourselves and be hindered by what we hear and what we see.

Much of the culture these days still emphasises so many difference and not the similarities. So when it comes to relationships in the AA fellowship, many misconceptions can happen, many misunderstandings and much self will and much confusion.

Not Wanting the Truth

Sometimes we just donít want to know the truth, as we have imagined and more importantly an agenda we may share openly or an agenda we are operating to in some form of stealth mode. We are all human, we all love to be loved, of course by those we love too, and still we find as nature is no real help, we can be barking up the wrong trees at the wrong imaginings.

So in the Fellowship of AA

We are as gormless and witless and as flummoxed by relationships as any other band of humans just trying to get along. And we know also how vulnerable, needy and often just plain wilful we all can be. And this includes me as much as anyone.

After a few years sobriety a comment made yesterday on my blog, suggested was it all worth it if we only get to live and make life work for just today?

We Are Just One Day Sober Always

And not that sober in our thinking when our feelings are telling us so much else. We are so complicated we often need simple and easy suggestions to follow.

A Day At A Time

And into my fourth year well and truly. All the old understandings and experiences still are there. All the old notions and feelings ever present. So when asked or commented is it worth it? I must emphatically say yes!

Yes Its Worth It - Sobriety

I learn every day, I donít stop learning. And as time goes by we can learn the same things over, and yet every time we learn a little bit more about ourselves, our outlook, our integrity. If we sit still, donít change and donít work out our living in the day, well we donít make progress.

Today

Frightful weather and I have been out and about. And a trip to Soho in the rain, cycling in the rain to feed a cat. Walking remains as painful as ever and I am hampered when the weather goes as it has.

Soho Treatment Service

It was closed, a power cut and no follow up meeting this afternoon. I got there made the effort and although there was no one there from my learning days in sobriety, it was worth it to make the effort and make the trip. Why? Because its endeavour and learning and of course London is always fascinating to me. Its full of people.

People - My Raison d'Ítre

Seems most my adult life I have learned much and have experience of years helping assisting and support human development. Each person unique, yet our template of life is pretty standard and easy to understand. Yet we learn to make it all so complicated.

Not right minded human wishes to cause hurt or harm, yet we do often just by being ourselves. We all have opinions outlooks and needs and wants. We make it so as life teaches us. Some lessons teach us when we need move on and let go.

Let go in the fellowship of AA

Letting go old ideas, old behaviour and developing new outlooks and new ways to live a simple life as a complicated we are, simple works best. And the tents of open, honest and willing are often lost as we find ourselves in the mire once again. Its just human to be like this.

Self Will and Obsessions

These things haunt the mind, whether an addict or just a normal human, we can be bent out of shape pretty easily. And we are good at thinking our way and forgetting others have their own process and outlooks.

Denial and Omissions

So easy for us humans, I do it and know the world does it, that is we all do it. And when we are open and honest we can be hurtful, as we find our path. Best not to let omissions and denials cloud our path for too long as addicts or we end up back where we started. And again this applies to all humans.

So in all this its easy to make assumptions, omissions, obvious denials and the harder denials are that we can change outside forces.

Powerless

We are powerless to make others take on our view unless of course they like it and want it. Places and things evoke much and past times will always be there to haunt to the good or bad of our feelings.

Letting Go

And acceptance of people, places and things as they are seems obvious unless of course its not what we want. Even when we donít know quite what we want. Let go, so simple and so hard to do. We do make our lives complicated.

AA Lunch Meeting

I got to an AA lunchtime meeting today. All good and seeing someone I know make a year sober! Their truth is their truth, and not quite what I recollected. But in all this we learn to let people find their path and progress.

Progress Not Perfection

Is an absolute necessity. We make mistakes, we learn, we adjust, we move on. So simple so blinking hard we spend decades sometimes letting go what we have no right to question of others and their behaviour.

Days Of change

We live them and make our way as we do, imperfectly and perfectly able to learn if we choose. When we feel right we enjoy, when we need be cautious we feel it in our instinctive understanding. We are best understanding our feelings and then working out what it may mean. Often we need amend and move on. Or we get and can see no end or solution.

Indeed we will never be perfect other than perfectly imperfect. And so it goes..

Serenity for the Sloane Ranger

Yes raining here in the capital. And getting blustery. The mood of people today in the Earls Court area and anything connected to public transport must have been close to despair. It was a real pig trying to get anywhere and nowhere seemed the best destination. But hey, thatís London, grinding as always to a halt. Road works and gas works, electricity works and water works! Flipping heck, is there a project manager somewhere in charge? No? Well bless my weary soul we could ask our councils to sort this out surely. Or have they given up the ghost too? Seems everything is slowing down and falling down and most of all not working quite the way it might.
Some things are sent to try us, test us and make us grateful to be alive at all, and then public works, or rather privatised works, donít work!

Anyway Iím alright, smiles. And felicitations. I am not at the NHS conference after all, between a hacking cough and my bit being cancelled it seemed better to stay away. Time constraints and such. And I am grateful for that. Its better to keep my germs local anyways, and cough too my hearts content. And I have other things to be doing as well. So sadly my contribution was taken out. Never mind another time. At least the Beeb have my thoughts on the miracles the NHS did for me. And you know, I am sure somehow some way they will filter back eventually. In this respect, the NHS deserve all the praise I can muster, for their work in helping some of us back to some state of repair to function in life again, immeasurable success in my opinion, and that is the truth of it.

So I am back home, its Thursday night, I went to a meeting and then saw my relation, Tiger cat, at my sisters, and we shared a moment before I headed back home. She is happy enough and grumpy. I am ok though, went to a splendid meeting of the fellowship.

On my way, just after six, outside Sloane Sq tube station it always strikes me itís a meeting place of the beautiful. Beautiful women bedecked and ready for a night out. Pensive and waiting, some with phones to ears, others texting, and casual smokers puffing as if they are in a hurry to get their fix and chew gum to hide the fumes. And men of course, handsome specimens for the ladies to enjoy. Smiles I reckon Iím still handsome, closer to a Sean Connery, than a Robbie Williams. Old dogs like me still admire the scenes wistfullyÖ

Realism, Pragmatism and Acceptance

Are the keys to living today! And our evening in the meeting for me was excellent. Our speaker tonight has been around a long time sober. With every type of hardship and life experience which teaches us to live honestly and be truthful in all matters.

This thing of truth, it bugs the dickens out of some. I love it though, its my nature to find truth in me especially. And itís a lifetime thing. As if we donít know it we need be reminded we are never going to be perfect, that there are parts of us which can be developed and made more balanced.

And we have an excellent discussion and I share a little about my learning and my feelings these days.

Feelings

We all have all the feelings nature gave. Which means some of us, well all of us have every feeling inside us known to mankind. And as with all of us, some of our feelings work well and others donít. We may suppress them or express them inadequately because we never had opportunity to learn how. And for me, I learned the good feelings and not the bad ones. That is the bad ones like anger and rage, they were never allowed in my upbringing. And so these days I need learn how to express, appropriately to the right size all my feelings, as they happen in response to my situation, and not a reaction from my stored up memories.

Right sized feelings to the events and circumstances serve us well. Suppression does not serve anyone well. And we need be careful and responsive and emotional as our world turns. Our feelings need validation and expression where we can. And we learn this in recovery.

I was very pleased and shared my thanks for the speaker last night. So good to hear truth, that the world is just the way it is, with every hardship and every joyful moment we can have.

We are better for our experiences, when we know how we feel, and can experience feelings with truth and honesty.

Acceptance

Some of us took a long time to learn that acceptance is not something we get, and then thatís it! Acceptance is an ongoing job, because some things in life are so big, we cannot get over them or round them in one go. Death, disease, loss of anything can give us grief for years. And acceptance is a way of living through grief.

Steps

We talk of our twelve step programme all the time. And some feel they have completed the 12 step programme. As they get wiser, they start to realise there is no end to the 12 steps, they are merely a template for living. And there is no end. Somehow, one day at a time, more will get this as the process of living and not the completion of a period of learning or a period where there is a graduation day. The graduation day for living anything, is our ending, however this occurs.

So overall and with the benefit of a few hours sleep. Courtesy of pain meds, life is ok. And I am still not good with the cold, and coughing is a bind.

Today

And I am glad I am superfluous at the NHS conference as my part has been chopped out of the agenda. It would have been great to be there, to be an observer, but better to be keeping well and to myself today, and coughing when I need rather than when I can. Ho hum and onwards to this day. Rained all night and so its fresher.

So just the Tiger cat and me to keep safe, suits me fine. A balance is always with us and we need simply go with the flow of living, and not the wants which hamper and pester serenity.

Be Tolerant

You have the power to tolerate anyone and any situation. But tolerance is not just suffering in silence.

It means going beyond any personal discomfort you may feel, and giving a gift to whom ever you would tolerate. Give your time, attention, understanding, compassion, care - all are gifts, which paradoxically, you also receive in the process of giving.

And, as you do, you will experience your own self esteem and inner strength grow. In this way you can turn tolerance into strength.
