Big Issues London

"The Big Issue"

The Big Issue Foundation's core ethos is self help. We offer support to homeless and socially excluded people who seek to gain control of their lives and help them move off the streets and into a home and a job.We work with over 2000 vendors across the UK, supporting them with a diverse program of opportunities either delivered through our own services or in partnership with specialist agencies. Each new vendor has a Needs Assessment, and from this an individual action plan is set, which is monitored in supervision sessions with support staff.

Ghandi

There come to us moments in life when about some things we need no proof from without. A little voice within us tells us, 'You are on the right track, move neither to your left nor right, but keep to the straight and narrow way.

A person falsely claiming to act under divine inspiration or the promptings of the inner voice without having any such, will fare worse than the one falsely claiming to act under the authority of an earthly sovereign. Whereas the latter on being exposed will escape with injury to his body, the former may perish body and soul together.

You have to believe no one but yourselves. You must try to listen to the inner voice, but if you will not have the expression"inner voice", you may use the expression "dictates of reason", which you should obey, and if you will not parade God, I have no doubt you will parade something else which in the end will prove to be God, for, fortunately, there is no one and nothing else but God in this universe.

For me truth is the sovereign principle, which includes numerous other principles. This truth is not only truthfulness in word, but truthfulness in thought also, and not only the relative truth of our conception, but the Absolute Truth, the Eternal Principle, that is God. There are innumerable definitions of God, because His manifestations are innumerable. They overwhelm me with wonder and awe and for a moment stun me.

DonInLondon July 13 2007 - Support And Love ‘Day in the Life’

All this week its not about me. And I am relieved to be around to support and be there for my family and my Sister in particular. Her Partner of two decades died last Sunday.

Hope

There had been hope up until the last day, and even then we all wish for a miracle, and even when the Doctors tell us there is no hope and there is nothing more they can do, we keep pouring out our love and hoping. And we do our best and wonder what else we are there to do. No matter what we have done, there is never a right or wrong way in these matters. Respecting space and distance, and ensuring we can all put one foot in front of the other as time marches all too quickly and so very slowly. These days are hard.

Love

I keep harking back to love. And the simple truth is it was a love affair of many years. And the love was more and more deep. As an outsider looking in, because we are even if we are family, I could see that where things were was just as it may be for two people living and working out next steps.

There is the funeral next Wednesday, and not a wedding as planned on the Friday following. So these days are tinged with promise as well as sadness for how things are right now.

Relief and Gratitude

I am relieved beyond measure for the support shown and the times shared with friends in fellowship who help me keep just right sized. Available to help, not so much put my foot in the way, or tread on feelings needing no more disturbance than has already happened. Its ok to be me and helpful and to absent myself as asked and accepted.

I have gratitude for my friends who share their experiences and their hopes and their grief so I may share mine. And of course be there in whatever shape or form a person, a bother can be.

Many People

Many people knew Christopher in many different situations. And their grief is palpable. And as with sudden illness and then an end not foreseen even until the last day as some treatment might have been a possibility, the calamity is profound. So my sister has found it hard these last few days, grieving herself and then others as well, being in touch. It is overwhelming for anyone.

So I am grateful to help as asked and done as requested. And before, I have said I have no experience of these days with a completely sober head. So the experience is as real can be, and nothing stops pain felt in the moment.

Life on Life’s Terms

This spiritual connection to this present moment. And seeing two people who cared deeply for each other, one nursing and one being nursed. And that love kept him going and trying his level best to survive until that last day. Love was key.

Love was Key

We humans and endeavour, connection and better in company when we are grieving a loss, and still much more private time needed without doubt. As others have become aware this week it has been a shock to them and now they feel the grief too. I need to be level and accepting and doing as requested. Whatever this may be. Sometimes nothing as the understanding is there and that is enough.

For Now

Every element we humans can feel, every cherished moment and every second recollected. Its not easy at all for us humans, we come with no experience and no instructions when we come face to face with life in these hardest moments. And especially endings and torments we never wished for.

Friends and Support - Fellowship

Smiles here, just rang a friend who helped me last night just deal with all things actually. And it was good. We nearly had an arrangement to meet up this evening and just checked they were ok.

Its good we do these things. We never know. So I feel ok, having seen my Sister and my Mother tonight. That they are dealing with these moments as best can be. We see courage beyond measure and care and also the love that has been taken away. The gap is immense. And its not just family affected as I mentioned. it’s a lot of people who are just finding out.

I am fortunate I realise for fellowship and kindest support I never knew was there, and probably until now, never knew how to accept or even be able to understand until now.

Serenity and Acceptance

A long haul feels less daunting with family and friends, as asked I keep saying, as I know in the past, there is no right or wrong way to be. We just react and respond as we may.

Acceptance, of what can change and what I cannot change does help me. I cannot fix a thing. Fortitude helps, faith in people has been amplified over the last few days. And I guess more is to come. Shock and that feeling of not being able to believe it, still hangs heavy.

Serenity

Will come as time permits. Recollections are too near and close. Grief will work as it will and we learn something about living we need never wish for. I wonder in these modern times if there is something lacking which we need educate and inform people about these moments. I realise there is little preparation ever as experiences unfold.

At least we see and understand our humanity and frailty and our vulnerability. We see care and support. And we are part of life as life deals. Not ever easy it seems today.

~ Why We are Special and Different ~ With every Similarity

It was an extraordinary meeting of my fellowship last night, its power was not lost on me. Before the meeting, I and a friend had spent time discussing philosophy and love, and loving and spirituality. You know the type of heavy subjects of life we make our business now and then, for me though more often now than then. Our inclination to discuss the bigness of living and its importance is not lost on me or the significance of every element that brings me to discuss these issues of living.

Me and my friend, we have known each other a while, we are very close in our feelings and thoughts on life, how to live and be ourselves. Simple things most take for granted and don’t really consider because it seems obvious what we are about and how to go about living. After all when we are busy with life, why indeed analyse what we do, especially if what we do apparently keeps us happy and content. Content? Not most folks I know when I look into their eyes, they are living what they know because they know nothing else, and looking to their future and something else. The journey that most of us feel we take is about tomorrow and safety and future happiness, we seem to give up a lot of the now merely for the promise of what comes next. Seems like a lot of religion is focussed this way. And maybe I am offering a critique from me when I mention this future perfect.

Future perfect I estimate has some value, simply because we are moving forwards to something different all the time. The moving forward though time, that motion to something new makes us forgetful most of the time about the now of life. Right now, always the ever present, present moment of connection, our spiritual moment of now!

My friend and close confidant in many aspects of living is changing their life and with dramatic effect, moving from one form of living to another. Full of new elements life is becoming interesting in a different way. A move to study, a move to another way of living, a move from a good life to another good life. Actually a move that many would never initiate, except when there is an urge for another outlook. The outlook will change inevitably, the person and character will become more connected to living the day and the present, and the person will adapt, yet in all this the core of the person will not change, that person is remaining the same, merely developing and connecting more fully to their living. What an amazing transforming and growing experience! And I support this with my biased outlook, its an urge to acquire more connection to the present differently while the individual will be as similar and authentic as ever. A risk on the surface of life as the inner being is enabled to emerge and be more of themselves in this odd world of opportunity.

Radical changes we all have at our fingertips. Some radical changes happen as a matter of course, some are initiated with choice, in what seems a more and more choiceless world where many are just driven along and consume all we encounter, like vacuums sucking it up and expanding without real application to the finest of living in this ever present, present.

All this discussion before the meeting and walking into a discourse on two lives, their journey to hell and a form of redemption many never get opportunity to encounter. We are indeed lucky when we find this opportunity to redeem our core living, as for most the notion is a million light years away from their perceptions and reality.

Or is it we who indeed visit hell on earth in one way or another are just playing catch up with humanity who never discuss this journey of life, the actual importance of the present perfect? It may be what we who have experienced hellish self obliteration, its in our make up, we are just getting a grip on what intrinsically everyone knows and never talks through? We well it matters not because writing about what life is means more now than ever, when hell has been lived as close and often as we in our fellowship live and breath these days.

The enlightenment and redemption from self obsession, where nothing works anymore. A move to calmer lives. All these things are quite possible, where we value our rarest commodity, love of ourselves and our fellows in all the world. Where love is the meaning of life in all its glory, forms and manifestations, from simply friendship to profound connection to life and our fellows. All this is the stuff of our fellowship and what we are about. Community, similarity, uniqueness of perception and our authentic good selves emerge with clear heads as we learn life again, or maybe we learn, simply, just to live well.

Speakers spoke and delivered there account of life then, life now and more important for many who have yet to be enlightened, the connection to this present moment. The moment we can experience best, right now. Not that life is always a box of chocolates as Forrest Gump observed, or rather he qualified that some nuggets in the chocolate box, we will never enjoy quite as others.

The message boils down simply that if we can be in touch with now, whether its good or bad, if we experience it as real and not denied or modified by some alteration like drink or drugs, just to encounter it with our full emotional beings, we make it work most effectively.

Even when we get a kick in the face, we can make most use of the moment, when its as hard and unpleasant as it can be joyful, its how we deal with the present that helps us connect to ourselves and environment as nature intended. And that we as mankind ameliorate so easily the effects good or bad through every process to cope with reality, we can become lost to it, if we let it be so. If we grab hold our present and see it for real, we deal with it connect to it and live it to the full. It then matters not and we need not be lost to the present, or hostage to a future which is most likely a dream and never a reality. We are best shaping our futures by living now and well.

Both speakers had encountered life threatening changes in health above and beyond the immediate of addiction and both had found living the present full on best without resort to fix their outlook, indeed to fix the reality would have led back to insanity as quickly as anything and a loss of living life would have been the outcome.

It struck home to me, of course it would for my other chronic condition means I will surely lose my living if I do not attend to the present moment each and every day.

So their words and the power of now are quite easy to understand, in the context that each day, a day at a time is full of joy and sadness a day long. We need not bother dramatically about tomorrow or put off our gratification till another day which we may not live. And at the same time we need not lose our decorum or balance when we are faced with life threatening changes. We might become more aware of our connection with a sharp shock to our system, whatever form that may take.

And in common living when we are just moving along more connected to the present moment, we can in balance and decorum enjoy or feel our connection as it really is, up or down in mood without attempting to change or fix ourselves with something or someone. A powerful experience of life shared, not dissimilar from my own, yet each unique and authentic.

We need no big drama of ego, or drive from self obsession to make life work, we need only face what we have openly and soberly, with dizzy joy, or deep sadness, as long as we face what is in this present perfect.

Spiritual as I continue to say, its not religious of God driven, indeed God’s account has nothing to do with living any time we might examine our spiritual essence. Spiritual is merely connection as fully as we can to now, the present. To experience what is in front of us simply and obviously, without filters or any dementia caused by our internal fears of life itself.

No one on this planet is more spiritual in their capacity than any other. We are all equally gifted and it’s the difference of our living which makes us able or less able to apply our spiritual selves to life and living. We may think we are gifted differently, we are not, for the connection to life is simplest in its true spiritual form. And no one is a prophet or a wise person beyond another, it is only some might find the answer as others lumber for it in other ways. No one has a monopoly or right way. For the right way is your way, authentic and original to you or me. We get it sometimes early, or later, or never. If only we looked to the now of life, we might all get it, this thing called spirituality, and toss away mysteries mystics would wrap and use to control us and manipulate beyond the present moment of now.

That is life I am able to observe, the ever present, present perfect and imperfect.

My friend and I were very happy with our discussion before the meeting, found the two lives shared and our talks after confirmed merely one thing. Life is what it is, best accepted with all the choices we have to experience it now as it is, with ups and downs and better connections as we go. The journey is key, the destination never a certainty unless the destination just passed by as another moment ticked by, tick, tock, our connected clock.

And our love of life and living, in decorum we learn and balance we learn to understand it as we go, it’s a personal thing and a choice thing, when of course we have choices in this pastiche we call now.

And of love? Well love makes the world go round and round. Love is manifest and all that falls out of love, we may learn our connection to that spirit of any age our currency of zeitgeist. Timeless and eternal, always ephemeral, the paradox of life is its loss and rebirth as we go.

If we live now and understand the ever present, present, origins and endings are less important, offering us context to understanding the what is manifest, original and authentic and ever so similar in our unique living.

We all clamber along with grace of age and maturity and the simplicity of a child’s gaze in wonder, never lost to memory, made good with experience and connection.

Be Tolerant

You have the power to tolerate anyone and any situation. But tolerance is not just suffering in silence.

It means going beyond any personal discomfort you may feel, and giving a gift to whom ever you would tolerate. Give your time, attention, understanding, compassion, care - all are gifts, which paradoxically, you also receive in the process of giving.

And, as you do, you will experience your own self esteem and inner strength grow. In this way you can turn tolerance into strength.

Downfall of Citizen Black July 14 2007

· Conrad Black facing up to 20 years in prison

· Peer convicted of fraud and obstruction of justice

· Former Telegraph boss embezzled $6m from firm

Andrew Clark in Chicago

Disgraced media mogul Conrad Black faces a lengthy stretch in a US jail after a court convicted him of looting millions of pounds from his Hollinger empire by embezzling funds from shareholders.

After more than 70 hours of deliberation, a Chicago jury delivered verdicts of guilty on three charges of fraud and one charge of obstructing justice - although the former Telegraph owner was cleared of a further nine charges, including tax evasion and racketeering.

Prosecutors are pressing for 15 to 20 years, although lawyers suggested it would more likely be closer to five years. Defence lawyers said Black would appeal against the convictions. Looking pale and drawn, he stared stony-faced in front of him as Judge Amy St Eve read out the verdicts. Co-defendants, Jack Boultbee, Peter Atkinson and Mark Kipnis, were also found guilty of fraud.

In a charged emotional scene, Black's family used a brief adjournment to hurry to his side. Barbara Amiel put an arm round her grimacing husband, who was immaculately dressed in cream suit and mauve tie, while his daughter, Alana, patted him gently and offered comforting words.

Corrupt media tycoon faces 20 years’ jail July 14 2007

James Bone in Chicago

Lord Black of Crossharbour, once one of the most powerful press barons in the world, faces 15-20 years behind bars after a jury declared him guilty yesterday of looting the newspaper empire he built.

The former Telegraph chairman was convicted of three counts of fraud and one charge of obstruction of justice at the climax of a four-month trial in Chicago.

Black breathed heavily as he listened to the jury foreman read the verdict, clearing him of nine of the thirteen charges against him. He avoided the gaze of his wife, the columnist Barbara Amiel, until she asked a lawyer for a scrap of paper to scribble him a note. He passed her a message back.

The verdict completes the public disgrace of the Canadian-born peer, a friend of Baroness Thatcher who was elevated to the House of Lords by Tony Blair at the request of William Hague. The Conservative Party withdrew the whip from him last night, removing his right to sit as a Tory in the Lords.

Eric Sussman, the lead prosecutor, told the judge: “Even under the most conservative estimate of the sentencing guidelines, Mr Black is facing between 15 and 20 years.”

Lord Fraud: Conrad Black faces jail after being convicted on four counts of fraud and obstruction July 14 2007

By Stephen Foley in Chicago

Conrad Black, the former newspaper tycoon whose ownership of The Daily Telegraph won him the keys to the British establishment and a seat in the House of Lords, is facing 20 years in jail in the US after being convicted as a fraudster.

Lord Black of Crossharbour remained stone-faced as the unanimous verdicts were read: guilty on three counts of defrauding outside shareholders in his newspaper company, and one of obstructing justice. His wife, the columnist Barbara Amiel, rushed to his side after the result, and huddled with her husband while members of Black's legal team shielded the couple from journalists who have followed all the salacious details in the trial of a man who was once one of the most feared media bosses in the UK and North America.

The 62-year-old, born in Canada, has belligerently protested his innocence since being charged in 2005, and listened impassively through almost four months of testimony in a Chicago courthouse where prosecutors explained how the lavish lifestyle he enjoyed with Lady Black was funded through bogus business deals. He had predicted a complete acquittal that would allow him to rebuild his media empire and launch a blizzard of libel actions against shareholders, independent board members and critical biographers who challenged how he used the company, Hollinger International, as a personal piggy bank.

Instead, his reputation now lies in tatters.

Lawyers for the prosecution and his co-defendants were left waiting in the hushed courtroom as Black arrived 10 minutes late for the verdict, which had been arranged for 10.15am. Black, with his wife and his daughter from his first marriage, Alana, has been staying far from the courthouse in Chicago's most luxurious hotel, the Ritz-Carlton.

The jury returned their verdict early on their 12th day of deliberation, after indicating earlier that they were having trouble reaching unanimity. In the end, they acquitted Black of a greater number of charges than those on which they found him guilty.

The charges on which he has been convicted carry a maximum penalty that adds up to 35 years' jail, and the prosecution signalled that they thought a realistic if not conservative sentence would be of 15 to 20 years. The defence, which will appeal, fought a prosecution motion to have Black's bail revoked. The issue will be decided on Thursday. Last night he remained free on his $21m (£10.5m) bail.

Eric Sussman, for the prosecution, characterised Black as a man who has repeatedly thumbed his nose at the US justice system, and who could use assets transferred to his wife to fund a flight from US justice. " Literally millions of dollars is moving between them," Mr Sussman said.

The jury of nine women and three men decided that he and a cabal of favoured executives had conspired to steal $3.5m, which they skimmed from the proceeds of the sale of newspapers owned by their company, Hollinger International.
